LIVE

Seminole sprang from the shale and sandstone which became home to the Seminole Nation when Oklahoma was still known as "Indian Territory."  Its wide-open terrain once served the purposes of outlaws who roamed the range in search of their ill-gotten gain. The Greater Seminole Area was one of Oklahoma's 22 "giant oil fields" and continues to be a viable part of our state's economy.

Griffin’s Custom Framing opened in Seminole in February 1997. I grew up here and after my wife, Susie and I had both retired from the Navy, we wanted a nice community to settle down in. I won and now Susie even agrees with the decision for small town life. I began painting watercolor art in the early 1980’s for entertainment during a Navy deployment to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. Painting led to framing which ultimately led to a job with Deck the Walls in Memphis with the simple thought of just being able to frame my personal work better. After framing professionally for a short while, I realized I liked picture framing more then I liked painting.

At that point I started planning for my own business. I moved up to a more exclusive frame shop, “Designer Frames and Gallery” and learned the upscale techniques of framing. During this period I was saving and acquiring equipment I would need for my own business. My expectations for a framing business in a small town weren’t too grand, since the framing business estimates that only about 12% of the population uses a custom framing service. I hadn’t paid for custom framing but a few times during my adult life.

I thought that I would get to paint some during the day and take care of the few customers that might come in during the week, hoping to pay expenses, make a little money and have an enjoyable retirement job. It has been surprising and rewarding to find that there are a lot of people in our area that have art, photographs, documents and certificates that needed framing.

It is also nice that “hometown” people understand that a one person store owner has to have some time off occasionally and when they see my hand written sign in the window,

“Closed til Thursday for Vacation”; they just come back Friday with their framing.

Seems like a good time to thank the many customers that have helped make a specialty shop like mine successful. Thanks to each of you. John Griffin
